Codesmith Hosts Summer Academy of Code in Los Angeles & Oxford
(PRWEB) August 28, 2017 -- This summer, Codesmith is opening its doors to talented college coders participating in Summer Academy of Code, a one week coding residency for undergraduate and graduate students from around the world.
The program provides students with the opportunity to spend one week immersed in coding, building projects and learning about a career in software engineering. With a record 600 applications for 25 spaces in LA and 45 in Oxford Jenny Mith, Codesmith’s Lead on the Academy shared, “We were overwhelmed by the level of interest in the program - it is a testament to the passion that today’s students have for building, not just theorizing."
Students’ motivations for joining the program were diverse - examples included to build an application to help women in Kenya report rape, to work more effectively on bioinformatics and to be able to teach young women to code.
The students come from schools around the world - Yale, MIT, Berkeley, Harvard and Oxford - and are studying a range of disciplines including Computer science, Mechanical Engineering, Biochemistry and even Violin performance. Students include undergraduates of all stages and graduates - both Masters and PhDs.
The one week Summer Academy of Code program covers functional and Object oriented programming in Javascript, web development with Ajax, APIs and DOM manipulation (and on the senior track, React/Node). In the second half of the week students build a project that pushes them to problem-solve from scratch. As important, they build a community of fellow coders. CEO of Codesmith, Will Sentance noted, “We are using the Codesmith pedagogy that focuses on creating autonomous problem-solvers and condensing it to a one-week format for this phenomenal group of students”
Because the program is selective, Codesmith led preparatory workshops at colleges across the country. Codesmith also sponsored a number of scholarships towards tuition costs.
The Summer Academy of Code takes place in LA and Oxford in August and September 2017 with future cohorts to be held in 2018.
