Colle Farmers Market, Organic Food Advocate, Commends USDA for Awarding $3 Million in Organic Agriculture Grants
Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) December 17, 2013 -- Colle Farmers Market, an organic farming advocate, responds to an article published by the USDA on December 11th, which details the grants awarded to universities making strides in organic agriculture research, totaling over $3 million.
According to an article published by the USDA titled “USDA Grants Support Organic Agriculture Research,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) recently awarded grants to five universities that have made significant strides in organic agriculture research. Totaling over $3 million, the USDA granted funds to the University of Florida, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, University of Texas Pan American and Washington State University as part of the Organic Transitions Program. These grants are meant to help these universities with ways to “improve the competitiveness of organic livestock and crop producers.”
The article says the Washington State University was awarded the biggest grant, totaling $749,661, for its research that “examines whether, over time, the adoption of organic farming improves natural pest control.”
The University of Texas Pan American also received a considerable amount of funding from the USDA for its project focusing on “launching an innovative new academic program that engages students in rigorous, well-designed research projects designed to address real-world problems faced by organic farmers in south Texas.”
A representative from Colle Farmers Market, an organic food advocate, applauds the organization for providing financial assistance to these universities. “These universities are working to educate the public on organic, sustainable agriculture practices and help organic farmers better tend to their crops,” the rep says. “It’s important that these universities continue to make significant discoveries about the health and environmental benefits of organic farming so that consumers and lawmakers can make better decisions concerning food production.”
