Color Driven: A Three-Artist Show at Black Rock Center for the Arts Featuring Andrea Cybyk, M. Jane Johnson, and Mary Ellen Mogee
Germantown, MD (PRWEB) July 07, 2014 -- This summer, Color Driven, a three-artist exhibition featuring Andrea Cybyk, M. Jane Johnson, and Mary Ellen Mogee, opens at BlackRock Center for the Arts (12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown, MD). The exhibition, the second bringing these three artists together, will feature a collection of each of their bodies of work. The exhibition will run from July 9, 2014 through August 1, 2014, with an opening reception on July 12, 2014 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., with artists in attendance. All three artists will display work influenced by color, nature, energy, and movement in various media.

The work of artists will focus on their primary inspiration—color. M. Jane Johnson will present her latest work in acrylic and collage. Born and raised in Florida, Johnson has been living and working in the Washington DC area since her days in school. Johnson is a very physical painter who works the canvas by pouring, throwing and dripping paint, and boldly scribbling lines. She enjoys drawing, painting and the use of vibrant color. Texture, line, and color are all a very integral part of her work that often includes over 20 layers before completion. A confident mix of colors is a signature of her work. Her color choices lean to bright, happy colors, and many have commented on the energy they feel coming from her color selection.
Mary Ellen Mogee, a native of Illinois, has been living and working in the Washington, DC area since 1973. Her style is a contemporary abstract painting, working in acrylic and mixed media. Bright, saturated color, energy, and movement characterize her paintings. Currently, Mogee is working with thin layers of opaque, translucent, and transparent paint. Usually, her process is unplanned, beginning with random marks on canvas. From there, Mogee interacts with the emerging painting, discerning what it wants or where it is going. Her goal is continually to search for a unique and authentic personal expression and to share that with others.
A native of Northern Virginia with an engineering background, Andrea Cybyk didn’t begin painting until well after college. Cybyk has an active exhibition record, including shows at The Cooley Gallery in Leesburg, ArtSpace Herndon, HNTB Architecture in DC, and the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA. Her paintings are all about vibrant color and intricate layers. She builds complexity and texture by drawing, writing, erasing, painting, and adding collage, then edits the composition to simplify, unite, and make sense of it all. With a background in engineering, She is attracted to grids, parallel lines, circles, and repeated marks as a way of imposing structure on what could otherwise be chaos. The grid is never perfect, though - squeezed a bit here, bulging over there, and somewhat off-kilter in its exuberant struggle for order.
