Communities In Schools Issues Statement in Response to DACA Decision
Arlington, VA (PRWEB) September 05, 2017 -- Communities In Schools(CIS) today issued a statement in response to the White House’s decision to wind down the Executive Order known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The order offered temporary protection from deportation and work permits to young people brought to the United States as children.
“As millions of children return to school this week, they deserve a safe and respectful learning environment - yet this decision casts a cloud over hundreds of thousands of students, and instills anxiety and fear in schools and homes,” said Communities In Schools President and CEO Dale Erquiaga. “Public education is at the core of a democracy. Fear has no place in our schools. We owe it to Dreamers and their friends and family to surround all students with a network of support free from fear.”
Erquiaga added, “Any uncertainty will undoubtedly be of concern for some of the nearly 1.5 million kids and over 3,000 school support staff who are part of the CIS family. As a national network committed to supporting all students regardless of their immigration status, we are mobilizing now to provide information and resources so that our school based personnel can support these students and families to the best of our ability through this difficult time. Congress must act immediately to clarify the immigration status of the young people impacted by this decision.”
