Company Rallies To Support Breast Cancer Research
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) September 19, 2013 -- In April 2012, after losing the same job she’d held for 32 years, Shirley Parsons, an Accounting clerk, was excited to be joining a new company - RME. Five months after her first day, Parsons, tucked into a quiet hallway at the company’s headquarters in Tampa, FL to take a call from her doctor to get the results of her Mammogram.
"'When can you come in to discuss your results? You’re welcome to bring your family members.’ That’s what my Doctor said when I asked for my results. I knew it had to be bad," said Shirley.
"I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductile Carcinoma (IDC) - a cancer that had broken through the wall of the milk duct and begun to invade the tissues of my breast. Three words burned in my head - I HAD CANCER," she continued.
Four weeks later, after getting a lumpectomy, and in the midst of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Shirley returned to work. As she approached her desk, what she saw next brought her to tears.
"Everyone in the Accounting Department was wearing different colored bandannas. I’d lost all my hair due to my chemotherapy and had been wearing my own bandanna. It was the most heart-warming thing I’d ever experienced," said Parsons.
Since her return, RME’s support of Shirley Parson’s battle with cancer has continued to grow beyond the accounting dept. From holding fund raising events like a bake sale and "pink bra decorating contest" to RME sponsoring a team in "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" - the American Cancer Society’s October 19th walk-a-thon. To date, the "RME For The Community" Team is one of the leading corporate-sponsored teams having raised more than $1,200, for the charity event.
"I’m proud of how everyone in the company has rallied around Shirley and how they are giving their personal time and money to help raise awareness about breast cancer," said Jorge Villar.
"It doesn’t matter to me if you’ve been working at RME for one week or 18 years, we have been and always will be a family and since the day I started this company I’ve always said, family comes first," Villar continued.
As part of RME’s ongoing commitment to supporting charities in the greater Tampa Bay area, RME created the Community Outreach Program and has allocated $1,000 each quarter to support employee-sponsored non-profit events and volunteer activities.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 180,000 women in the United States find out they have invasive breast cancer each year. Most of them are diagnosed with IDC. Over time, IDC can spread to the lymph nodes and possibly to other areas of the body.
