Compassion Week Will Serve Thousands of People in Need Through Service and Social Justice Projects
LOS ALTOS, California (PRWEB) September 21, 2016 -- Volunteers will show love to neighbors and serve the community through 100 projects in the San Francisco Bay area during the fourth annual Compassion Week, October 3-9. Approximately 2,000 people will give their time to complete vital acts of service and social justice.
Sponsored by Los Altos United Methodist Church, the effort provides opportunities to get involved at 42 area agencies, with projects in areas such as poverty, hunger, homelessness, education, environment, veteran needs, housing and social justice.
“Compassion Week is an invitation to serve, care for and support our community,” said Los Altos UMC’s Minister of Community Engagement, Debbie Weatherspoon. “Los Altos United Methodist Church arranges service projects with partner organizations not only to make an impact now but also to inspire participants to continue serving with these organizations, showing that love serves year-round.”
Anyone interested in volunteering can learn more and register at CompassionWeekLosAltos.org for any of the diverse service opportunities, which range from building projects and food distributions to environmental cleanup efforts and Alzheimer’s research support. There is no cost associated with the activities, and options are available for participants of all skill levels, ages and availability.
There will be a Compassion Week celebration at Los Altos United Methodist Church on Sunday, October 16, from noon until 2:00 p.m. The event will include food trucks, an opportunity fair so that attendees can sign up for further volunteer work, a time of reflection and worship, and a shoot-out basketball tournament benefiting the fight against malaria in sub-Saharan Africa.
Compassion Week is funded in part by an event grant from United Methodist Communications’ Rethink Church initiative as a way to help local United Methodist churches in their efforts to join with their community to make a difference in the world. Volunteers do not have to be affiliated with The United Methodist Church – or any church – to participate.
