Complimentary Summer Gym Membership for Teens at AussieFIT Fitness Centers in Columbus Ohio
Columbus, Ohio (PRWEB) May 07, 2014 -- This summer, Columbus-area teens will again have the opportunity to spend their time in a safe and healthy environment without paying the price of an expensive camp or summer program. AussieFIT health clubs are providing summer health club memberships to teens between the ages of 12 and 17 at no charge. The program kicks off during May, which is National Fitness Month.
“Ohio has the 12th highest rate of diabetes in the nation, according to the most recent data available from the CDC.* We know physical activity and helping our youth grow up with healthy weights are effective tools to prevention,” says AussieFIT founder Geoff Dyer.
Dyer was formerly an overweight teen himself. He tipped the scales at 248 pounds when he was 17-years old. He believes providing complimentary health club memberships to teens will help prevent disease in the future, and in the short term, he feels it provides a safe alternative to pricey summer camps and misspent free time.
“Studies show that even teens who are genetically predisposed to obesity will maintain a healthy weight by exercising for an hour daily,” says Dyer, who formerly teamed with the Columbus Public Health’s Institute for Active Living on this initiative.
Overweight teens are at risk for many health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. Among the many benefits of physical activity are higher levels of self-confidence and lower stress and anxiety levels.
“Unfortunately, two out of every three adults are either overweight or obese and almost half of all teenagers are now overweight,” adds Dyer. “It’s very important for parents to encourage their children to lead an active lifestyle, which is why we are encouraging parents to come in during National Fitness Month to support their teens in a healthy decision.”
The program runs May 15 through August 15, 2014. Registered teens receive a 2-month complimentary membership within these dates.
