Consumer Spending: Shoppers Spent 30 Percent More This Past Holiday Season, with iPhone Users Leading the Pack
Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) January 30, 2014 -- Using real-time, aggregated data provided by Check, a mobile payments app used by more than 10 million consumers to pay bills, University of California, Berkeley, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Arizona State University researchers found that consumers spent 30% more during the 2013 holiday shopping season compared to the same period last year. Additionally, researchers determined iPhone users spent more this past season compared to Android users – as well as both groups’ average purchase amount and what retailers they chose to spend their money on.
iPhone users, who on average earn 50% more than Android users, spent nearly 40% more this holiday shopping season. Android users were not far behind, spending 33% more this season compared to the same period in 2012. Also, iPhone users paid $126.98 on average per purchase this year – more than $36 per purchase compared to their Android counterparts. The 2013 holiday shopping season was hugely successful for online retailers like Amazon. Both iPhone and Android users spent more at Amazon than any other retailer (traditional or online).
Lastly, when comparing spending patterns across geographies, researchers found that the highest average purchase amounts were made in the West, followed by the Mountain region and the Mideast region, respectively.
“From a research perspective, it’s amazing to work with the data provided by Check,” said Steven Tadelis, associate professor, Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley. “With it, we are able to make interesting conclusions about trends and how they relate to mobile users. Overall, we see consumer spending is up, a clear sign that consumers are becoming more confident in the economy.”
Methodology
Check provided the University of California, Berkeley and University of Michigan, Ann Arbor researchers a sample of anonymous user data from December 4, 2012 to December 31, 2013. The analysis draws on 158,585 Android and 205,182 iPhone users who were active in both the 2012 and 2013 holiday shopping season. The spending figures contain all spending recorded by Check. To account for accurate spending measures, users who were determined to be missing accounts were dropped from the sample.
