Last month Robb Ferer Co- Founder of Container Concepts™ submitted designs for approval to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HUD). Several of the company's turnkey cafe and retail concepts were submitted to see if they were required to meet the Commercial Modular or Special Purpose Commercial Modular codes.
"Commercial coach (modular)" means a structure transportable in one or more sections, designed and equipped for human occupancy for industrial, professional, or commercial purposes, which is required to be moved under permit, and shall include a trailer coach as defined in Section 635 of the Vehicle Code.
“Special Purpose Commercial Modular” means a vehicle with or without motive power, designed and equipped for human occupancy for industrial, professional, or commercial purposes, which is not required to be moved under permit, and shall include a trailer coach.
The review came back stating that Container Concepts™ is exempt from the requirement because the "units do not appear to be vehicles, licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicles" therefore do not fall under the requirement. This means that the "concepts" do not require special permitting to be transported and do not have to be reviewed by HUD during the building process.
