Contemporary Handmade Photo Prints Highlight New Gallery270 Exhibit in Englewood
Englewood, NJ (PRWEB) April 29, 2014 -- A new exhibit of handmade photos by brilliant photographers will open on May 8, 2014, at Gallery 270, 10 North Dean Street, Englewood, NJ.
While digital photography is being cranked out at breakneck speed, an elite group of photographic artists continue to use vintage processes to create stunning prints with their own hands. The exhibit, “The 21st Century Handmade Print,” features works by John Dugdale, Jefferson Hayman, Richard Kagan, Peter Liepke, Michael Massaia, and George Tice. These artists are involved in every step of their work’s creation and finished look with some even handcrafting the frames that present their prints.
This exhibition of such styles as toned silver gelatin, platinum/palladium, gum bichromate and cyanotype is evidence of a movement to perpetuate the skills and techniques required to create precious images. Sometimes, it takes hundreds of hours of effort to create the ephemeral beauty of a handmade photograph. These processes require difficult, fickle and increasingly expensive chemistry and handmade papers that can vary wildly with each new batch and lot.
According to Tom Gramegna, President and Curator of Gallery 270, “This choice collection of handmade work defines Gallery 270′s raison d’être — to extol the virtues and beauty of photographs. The unique finished works convey a sense of the skill, passion, sweat and blood that has been lavished on the image. But this is not an esoteric vintage exercise for its own sake. This is the sheer force of artistic drive against logic and the quick buck, in pursuit of results and beauty achievable in no other way. Our goal here is to call out and distinguish this special genre of photographic alchemists who are both modern artists and 21st century craftsmen.”
The show will be on display through July 3, 2014. Directions are available at http://www.gallery270.com.
