Convaid | R82 to Support Charlotte-based Rollin' Hornets and West Cabarrus WMCA with Equipment Loaner Program
MATTHEWS, N.C., Feb. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Families in and near Cabarrus, NC are in for a once-in-a-lifetime event thanks to a 9-year old girl – a special screening of wheelchair basketball documentary, The Rebound, at 3PM on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at McGill Baptist Church, 5300 Poplar Tent Road, Concorde, NC 28027. The screening will be followed by a question and answer session with adaptive athletes followed by a wheelchair basketball exhibition and scrimmage at 5PM.
The family event was made possible by Rollin' Hornets player and Cabarrus, NC resident Sophia Brunk, who won an Impact Grant from ABC Medical at last year's National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.
Joining Convaid | R82 in support of the event are West Cabarrus YMCA, where young Sophia is a member, Abilities Unlimited of the Carolinas, Charlotte Rollin' Hornets, McGill Baptist Church, ABC Medical and Strive Multisport.
The Rebound follows the underdog journey of the Miami Heat Wheels, a wheelchair basketball team, in its quest for a national title. Despite the team's dwindling resources, three adaptive athletes rally their team toward the title while striving to reach their dreams on and off the court.
In support of developing adaptive athletic programs at West Cabarrus YMCA and to support the Rollin' Hornets, Convaid | R82 has instituted a loaner program of R82 walkers or standers/gait trainers and other medical equipment for use by their athletes.
Organizer and adaptive wheelchair basketball mom, DeAnna Patterson said, "As the parent of three precious children who are always the different ones – the ones who stand out – the ones who can't participate in so much of life the way everyone around them does, what this community offers is a sense of belonging for my children. When they roll onto the court, their differences melt away. It is the only place I see true freedom in their eyes."
Ms. Patterson stressed the importance of showing the community-at-large that many of the stereotypes of children living with special needs are grounded in ignorance. She said that events such as this one are an opportunity to help people within the typical population gain a fresh perspective on people living in wheelchairs and how they wish to be treated.
She said, "It is our hope that as we spread awareness and assist in building a community of acceptance for our athletes to grow in. Should any person's life circumstances change drastically, we want members of our community to know that can always turn to for support."
"A big part of the Convaid | R82 community ethic is a strong commitment to support the special needs community to the extent of our capacity. Sometimes this means volunteering, providing educational outreach, donating equipment or helping spread awareness. It is important for us to help build awareness that adaptive athletes may have been born with congenital syndromes that affect the way their bodies move or may have suffered trauma leading to limited mobility and all desire to live as health and active of a lifestyle as they can. Our donation of equipment will help them balance and ambulate and enjoy playing basketball," said Kasper Lisby, North Carolina-based Etac NA Business Controller, who originated the donation.
