Cornerstone University Celebrates Martin Luther King Day with Week-long Events
Grand Rapids, Michigan (PRWEB) January 22, 2015 -- A week of events celebrating Martin Luther King Day will begin on campus Jan. 19 with guest speakers, a civil rights memorabilia showcase, Gospel music, ministry dance presentations, films, a soul food dinner and a free trip to the Jim Crow Museum for students.
Dr. Dennis Bland, president of the Center for Leadership Development in Indianapolis, will be the featured speaker at 10 a.m., Jan. 19 in chapel. Guest artist Nick Hill will perform from his debut album "Clear Direction."
Later that evening, the Dining Commons will offer a soul food dinner.
James Williamson, a black historian, will showcase black history artifacts in the Corum beginning at noon on Tuesday.
A dance presentation by Diane Blassingame of the Mind, Body and Soul Christian Dance Academy is scheduled at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 21 in the Corum.
A video called "Defying Black Statistics" will be shown at 7 p.m., Jan. 22 in the Corum.
On Jan. 23 all students and staff at CU are invited to take a tour of the Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University.
Eric Lewis, advisor of Cornerstone’s Multi-Cultural Organization (MCO) and organizer of the week is excited to offer students a variety of ways to learn more about African-American history.
Despite the week being packed with fun events and experiences, Lewis says that the greatest part about the celebration is the role that the Lord plays in it all.
“The celebration’s goal is not to promote negativity or victimization, but to promote and praise God for how he brings people together and through injustice,” said Lewis.
All events are sponsored by The Gathering, a student organization dedicated to enhancing the academic, professional, and social development of African American students within the CU community.
