Coro Pittsburgh Honors 9 Role Models in Values-based Leadership on January 23rd
Pittsburgh, Pa (PRWEB) January 14, 2015 -- Coro Pittsburgh announces the finalists for its 8th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Awards. Winners will be announced at a celebration to be held on January 23rd, 2015 from 5:30-8:30pm at the New Hazlett Theater.
The purpose of the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Awards is to identify role models in values based leadership. Coro president and CEO Greg Crowley says, “In a world saturated with images and stories of people who are held out as anti-role models—those whom we are not supposed to emulate—the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Awards provide specific examples of those who are worthy of being emulated. The people and organizations we honor are moved by their values to exercise ethically grounded leadership in the service of building a community that works for everyone.”
Values-based leadership at Coro is rooted in our goal of inspiring and preparing people who are early in their careers, and who want to make a difference in the world, to become leaders in our community. A leader is one whose actions result in opportunities for other people to step forward and contribute to a change process. In other words, a leader is a catalyst.
Coro is committed to building leadership with a strong orientation to values. Values inform why a leader commits to a leadership role. Martin Luther King Jr. activated thousands of people with a strong orientation towards the greater good. Specifically, he embraced the values of equity and social justice. Values also inform how a leader fulfills a leadership role. Dr. King led with nonviolence and courage in the face of oppression. By doing so, he served as a role model, inspiring and motivating others to step forward and contribute their talents to the civil rights movement.
Nominations for the MLK Awards were accepted from midnight on November 10 to midnight on December 8, 2014 in three categories of leadership:
• The Distinguished Individual Leadership Award goes to an individual whose actions and accomplishments exemplify values based leadership.
• The Distinguished Alumni Leadership Award goes to a Coro alumnus whose actions and accomplishments exemplify values based leadership.
• The Distinguished Organizational Leadership Award goes to an organization whose activities and accomplishments exemplify values based leadership.
Selection of award recipients was decided by a committee designated for each of the three categories. Committees included members of the Coro board, alumni and partner community.
