According to a December 3013 DOJ press release, Abbott Laboratories has agreed to pay the United States Government $5.475 million to resolve allegations that it violated the False Claims Act by allegedly paying kickbacks to doctors who implanted the company’s carotid, biliary, and peripheral vascular products. Abbott Laboratories is a global pharmaceuticals and health care products company based in Abbott Park, Ill.

The settlement resolves allegations that Abbott allegedly paid prominent physicians for teaching assignments, speaking engagements, and attending conferences. The expectation was that allegedly these physicians would arrange for the hospitals with which they were affiliated with to purchase Abbott’s carotid, biliary, and peripheral vascular products. As a result, the United States Government alleged Abbott violated the Anti-Kickback Act, and submitted false claims to Medicare for procedures in which these Abbott products were used. http://CorporateWhistleblowerCenter.Com

In this case, the whistleblower will receive a total payment of more than $1 million.
