Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation Announces $100,000 Matching Gift to Flint Child Health and Development Fund
Flint, MI (PRWEB) October 02, 2017 -- From now until the end of 2017, first-time donors to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund of the Foundation for Flint will have their gift matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000, thanks to a matching gift from the Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation, Inc. The matching gift announcement comes on National Child Health Day 2017, a time to celebrate the health and well-being of America’s children and families. Gifts can be made online at http://www.flintkids.org.
The Fund serves the long-term health and development needs of Flint children exposed to lead in their drinking water. It was established in January 2016 by Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, the Flint pediatrician whose research first raised awareness about elevated blood lead levels in Flint’s children. The Foundation for Flint, a supporting organization of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint (CFGF), was established to assist in Flint’s recovery from the water crisis.
It is estimated that more than 10,000 Flint children ages 0-6 were exposed to lead when the contaminated water flowed through the City of Flint’s water system beginning in April 2014. Twenty months later, on January 5, 2016, the State of Michigan declared a state of emergency in response to the water crisis and since that time donors from across America and the globe have given to the Fund.
“The Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation understands the severity of the situation and recognizes the support the Fund has provided to those affected by the Flint water crisis,” said Dr. Donna M. Norris, board member and chair of the Coverys Charitable Giving Committee. “The Foundation values initiatives focused on improving healthcare and in communities where Coverys policyholders work. We are happy to continue our support of the Fund and hope to inspire others to consider giving to this worthy initiative.”
Eligibility for the match challenge includes all first-time gifts from all individuals, businesses, corporations and foundations. Donors are especially encouraged to give in observance of National Child Health Day.
An Advisory Committee of community volunteers recommends grants from the Flint Child Health and Development Fund. Since the fund was established, $3.2 million in grants have been awarded from the $19 million raised. Grants support nonprofit organizations that are working to support the following areas:
• Increased access to high-quality early childhood education
• Providing access to healthy food and nutrition education
• Improving access to a medical home and a child health team for all children and pregnant mothers; and
• Increased family social and emotional supports as well as family literacy and parenting skills.
“We are grateful to Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation for keeping the spotlight on Flint children who continue to need support to combat the harmful effects of lead,” said Isaiah Oliver, President and CEO of CFGF. “Our desire is to see Flint children become strong, healthy, resilient individuals who can reach their full potential. With the support of Coverys’ matching gift, donors now have a unique opportunity to double their gift to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund.”
The Fund is intended to provide support over the next 20 years for interventions that will help Flint children overcome the effects of lead exposure. For more information about giving to the fund, contact Lisa Graham, Director of Gift Planning, at 810-767-3564.
