Crane and Rigging Hot Line Reviews North America's First Wind Speed Sensor With Smartphone App
Fort Dodge, Iowa (PRWEB) July 29, 2015 -- Crane & Rigging Hot Line reports a technologically sophisticated wind meter designed and engineered specifically for construction cranes is being distributed throughout North America by a BC firm, Bigfoot Crane Company. An industry first, this lightweight, compact wind speed sensor mounts easily using heavy-duty magnets and provides wind speed measurement data instantly through a paired display unit to any number of smartphones.
Information is sent wirelessly via Bluetooth to the ‘Windy’ anemometer app, available for both Apple and Android phones, which has a working range of up to roughly 2,000 feet. Operators can program their smartphone devices to sound alarms when wind speeds reach a preset level.
“Some industries use wireless technology all the time,” says Gerry Wiebe, Bigfoot’s Director of Business Development. “This is a first for the crane industry. Operators, site managers and safety staff can all access this wind speed data in real time without having to climb up into the crane. It’s so simple.”
At just over 8” tall and weighing just a ¼ pound, the Bigfoot Wind Meter is significantly smaller and lighter than traditional wind meters. A magnetically attached mounting bracket eliminates the need for complicated mounts, fabrication or welding to the crane itself.
“There have been something like 116 reported crane accidents since 2009 with 10% of those due to wind,” reports Wiebe. “This easy-to-use wind meter can make a big difference by alerting operators in plenty of time to stop operation and batten down.
