Creator of “Rambo” Headlines Rose State College Writing Conference in Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- Led by number one New York Times-bestselling author David Morrell, author of “First Blood” and creator of the iconic character “Rambo,” authors at the Rose State College Writing Short Course in Oklahoma City will share their secrets and techniques, agents will address the business side of writing and provide one-on-one interviews with writers, and editors will talk with attendees interested in writing for their publications.
The Short Course will be held at the Rose State College campus in the Tom Steed Community Learning Center, 6191 Tinker Diagonal Midwest City, OK 73110, located off Interstate-40 and Hudiburg Drive. Plenty of free parking is available.
Organized by New York Times-bestselling author William Bernhardt, the conference will bring some of the nation’s most successful writers and literary agents to Oklahoma. Guests include Oklahoma Author of the Year Rilla Askew, prolific writer Mel Odom, young adult sensation Sonia Gensler, novelist Kent Anderson, screenplay writer Andrew Horton, inspirational writer Rene Gutteridge, poet Carl Sennhenn, and Tim Tharp, author of the recent book and Sundance Film Festival headliner “The Spectacular Now.” Other professionals include New York agents Regina Brooks and Marcy Posner, editors Michael Mason, Eilis O'Neal, and Savannah Thorne, and other participants.
Attendees may sign up to interview with literary agents and editors at no additional fee. Signups will open at the Friday night reception. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet all the presenters, to have their books signed, and to chat with these special guests.
Additionally, the Short Course will hold its annual writing contest for Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Writing for Children. Entries for the 2013 Short Course Contest may be submitted at any time after the entrant has registered for the Short Course. The deadline for entries will be September 15, 2013. Winners will be announced September 27, 2013 at the Friday night program. There is no additional fee for entering the contests, and contestants may enter as many categories as desired, but only one submission in each category. The five categories are: Fiction (short stories or novel segments), Nonfiction (including memoir), Poetry, Flash Fiction, and Writing for Children (picture books, chapter books, or young adult). All submissions are limited to ten pages or fewer except Flash Fiction, which is limited to two pages. Entries must be submitted in the following format: double-spaced, Times New Roman, twelve-point font, one-inch margins on all sides. The title, author name, and category should appear on a cover sheet, but not on the manuscript pages. Manuscripts will not be returned. First place winners in each category will receive a $100 prize. Second place will be $50. The awarding of Honorable Mention prizes will be at the judges’ discretion. The contests are only open to people who have registered for the Short Course. No manuscript that has been previously published, in print or electronically, may be submitted. The cost of the Short Course is $129. Students may attend at the discounted rate of $49. Rose State faculty may attend the Short Course free of charge.
