Crowley Awards $10,000 in Scholarships to Four University of Washington Business Students
Seattle, Wash (PRWEB) November 20, 2013 -- Crowley Maritime Corporation recently awarded $2,500 Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships to four students in the University of Washington’s (UW) Foster School of Business. The students, Kainan Bell, Vi Nguyen, Giovanna Oseguera Tapia and David Kashubin, were chosen for their academic achievements, excellent scholarship essays and demonstrated financial need.
Bell, a native of Tacoma, Wash., is a junior studying business and social welfare. During his time at the university, he has held internships at KPMG and Boeing, served as a residential advisor and studied abroad in Brazil. He currently works in the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity as a student ambassador, a role that helps to recruit and reach out to students of underrepresented populations while increasing diversity on campus. As a student who grew up in a low-income household, Bell chose to focus his studies in areas that can help improve the lives of underprivileged people. Crowley’s scholarship is the reason that Bell is able to pursue opportunities such as this.
Nguyen is a senior at the Foster School of Business studying international business and marketing. She is pursuing a degree in Norwegian studies and is also president of the custom language track within the Certificate of International Studies in Business (CISB) program. The CISB program requires students to study a foreign language and the custom track allows students to study languages that are more unusual at the university, such as Norwegian, Russian and Chinese. Nguyen is also a member of several student organizations, including the UW’s chapter for the American Marketing Association (AMA) and the Norwegian Club. Nguyen works part-time at the UW Office of Student Financial Aid and in her free time enjoys outdoor activities, such as hiking and snowboarding. After graduation, she plans to build a career in business consulting.
Tapia, also a senior, is majoring in business marketing and is currently studying abroad at the University of Sussex, in England. Tapia is a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and has also been a part of UW’s AMA chapter. She holds two part-time jobs at the university, one at an on-campus café and the other as a student assistant for the UW Alumni Association in the finance and administration department. In her free time, she enjoys trying new foods, cooking, hiking and reading. Tapia plans to pursue a job in marketing, or seek a role within the Peace Corps upon graduation. Eventually she would like to earn an MBA.
Kashubin is a senior marketing major who is also pursuing a minor in psychology. A member of the UW AMA chapter, Kashubin enjoys playing football, ice hockey and tennis, and spending time with family. Upon graduation, he hopes to begin a career with a consulting company and later start his own company.
Crowley scholarships are part of Crowley's lengthy and ongoing commitment to education. Over the years, Crowley Chairman, President and CEO, Tom Crowley Jr., has directed the company to present scholarship dollars to deserving students at the maritime academies and other select institutions in the United States, Caribbean and Central America in the name of his father Thomas B. Crowley Sr., who guided the company to extraordinary heights before passing away in 1994.
Since 1984, Crowley has provided more than $3 million dollars in scholarship funding for more than 1,000 students. In 2006, the program expanded to Central America and to date has provided financial assistance to more 20 students in that region.
