CyberKnife Center of Chicago Moves to Elmhurst Memorial Center for Cancer Care
ELMHURST, Ill. (PRWEB) December 05, 2013 -- CyberKnife patients will soon receive their treatments at CyberKnife Center of Chicago’s newest location in the Elmhurst Memorial Center for Cancer Care.
CyberKnife Center of Chicago, a service of Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, is relocating from the hospital’s former Berteau Avenue campus to the Center for Cancer Care on Elmhurst Memorial’s main campus.
“Moving to the Center for Cancer Care will increase a patient’s access to all phases of their treatment plan and will provide a more patient-centered care experience,” said Dr. Andy Su, CyberKnife Center of Chicago medical director. “Being in one facility with other departments improves communication with other specialists on our team.”
The 32,000-square-foot Center for Cancer Care houses medical oncologist offices, an infusion center and radiation oncology services. The new center brings together all cancer treatment services and facilities in accordance with guidelines from the international patient-centered care organization, Planetree Alliance. Elmhurst Memorial Hospital is the second hospital in Illinois to earn Planetree designation.
The centralized design, which includes an on-site laboratory and access to nurse navigators, gives patients the ability to see physicians, get lab work and undergo therapy all in one day. Additionally, the new center also focuses on the experience of a patient’s loved ones. The infusion area is available to cancer patients, non-cancer patients and their families and features a shared social treatment area or private treatment bays.
CyberKnife Center of Chicago opened in 2009 to offer a noninvasive cancer treatment method called stereotactic radiosurgery and has since become a destination for CyberKnife treatment throughout the Chicago area, with patients coming from as far as Indiana to receive treatment.
CyberKnife treatment involves no incisions, no sedation and no overnight hospital stay. Tumors are treated with very precise, high-dose radiation beams while radiation exposure to healthy tissue surrounding a tumor is minimized. Side effects, if any, are minimal, and patients return to normal activity immediately following treatment.
“With five or fewer sessions required for treatment, the ease of CyberKnife treatment and ability to return quickly to normal activities with minimal side effects draws many patients,” Dr. Su said.
