Cylinder Wall Surface Finishing: BRM Announces User Feedback from Engine Rebuild; Images Show Ideal Cross-Hatch Pattern for Optimum Lubrication

In a recent article entitled Cylinder Honing for Motorcycle Engine Builds, BRM explains how the owner of a Suzuki GS-550L used a flexible hone to impart a final surface finish with a 45-degree crosshatch pattern.
Suzuki GS-series motorcycles first hit the streets in the 1970s, but were later modified for the U.S. marketplace. The air-cooled powerplant in the GS-550L featured a 549-cc, inline-4, 8-valve engine built with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC). Subsequent Suzuki motorcycle engines used similar designs, but added horsepower for improved performance.
Flexible Honing and Oil Retention
Sometimes called a ball hone, BRM’s Flex-Hone® tool features flexible nylon filaments that are permanently laminated to ball-like abrasive globules. After chucking a 240-grit aluminum oxide (AO) engine hone into his handheld electric drill, the motorcycle mechanic lubricated the cylinder honing tool with Flex-Hone® oil, BRM’s specially-formulated blend of honing and lapping oils.
