Cyrus the Maltese Learns to Wag His Tail After Months Left Outside: The Winnipeg Humane Society
Winnipeg, MB (PRWEB) October 29, 2013 -- When Cyrus the Maltese mix came to The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) on Oct. 11 his fur was so matted and filthy, veterinarians couldn’t determine how long he’d been outside. His tail had been weighed down under layers of matted fur for months – so much that he didn’t know how to wag it.
“Aside from his extremely matted fur, Cyrus was in good physical condition. He was a normal weight and had no scrapes or scratches,” said Dr. Melanie Youngs, WHS veterinarian. “Cyrus is such a friendly and lovable dog, and considering how sweet he is after being neglected for so long he’ll definitely make a great pet.”
WHS staff shaved and bathed Cyrus, and removed enough fur, dirt and fecal matter to fill a large plastic bag that weighed nearly three pounds. A newly clean and shaven Cyrus tentatively wagged his tail. Cyrus is currently under vet care and WHS staff hopes he will be up for adoption soon.
“Judging from his condition, Cyrus was an owned dog at some point,” said Dr. Youngs. “He didn’t have a tattoo, collar or microchip, and without proper ID it can be impossible to reunite animals with their owners.”
The WHS tattoos all animals that are up for adoption, and provides microchips for an additional fee.
