D.C. Lawyers Join Capital Area Food Bank To Take On Hunger During Month Of May
WASHINGTON, DC (PRWEB) April 28, 2017 -- More than 30 D.C. -area law firms will participate in a month-long competition this May to raise food, funds, and awareness about hunger for the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) during their ninth annual Food From the Bar campaign.
“DC has a greater number of attorneys per capita than any other part of the country,” CAFB President and CEO Nancy Roman said. “By joining in this annual tradition, the legal community is continuing to make a positive impact on thousands of lives by helping create access to fresh, nutritious food.”
This year’s campaign goal of $300,000 will go directly towards supporting the Food Bank’s mission of providing more than 750,000 meals to the Washington metro area. As schools close for the summer, hunger rates in children spike and the Capital Area Food Bank is there – with help from the Food From the Bar campaign – to provide those much needed meals.
“We are hoping this year will be our most successful year, beating last year’s final number of $275,000, and providing children and families with more meals for the 2017 summer season,” said Tim Sullivan of Thompson Coburn LLP, who, along with Kelly Fisher of the DC Women’s Bar Association, is co-chairing this year’s event. “The campaign brings firms together in a fun and creative way, while also giving back to the DC metro area community.”
The month-long ‘Food From the Bar’ campaign – which runs May 1 to June 2 – will be centered around a food, funds and volunteer drive for which campaign participants earn points for their firms/organizations while helping the CAFB distribute nutrient-rich meals to children, families and seniors in need this summer.
Former U.S. Attorney Dick Thornburgh, of K&L Gates, and Carl Vacketta, of counsel for DLA Piper, together co-chair the honorary committee, which includes Washington D.C.’s Mayor Bowser, D.C. Councilmembers Mary Cheh, Jack Evans, David Grosso, Kenyan McDuffie, Robert C. White Jr., Trayon White Sr., and Chairman Phil Mendelson; a board member of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association DC, Legal Marketing Association’s Laurie Paul and National Bar Association’s Keith Andrew Perry.
Registration is still open for this year’s campaign, which marks the largest effort to date with dozens of law firms, law schools and other legal professionals competing to raise funds and food for the more than half a million children, families and seniors at risk of hunger in the region.

The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest hunger relief organization in the Washington metro area serving over 530,000 people through direct food distribution programs and a network of 500 food assistance partners. This year, the Capital Area Food Bank distributed 45 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 37 million meals – including 17 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.
