Da Vinci Robot Surgery Complications News: Wright & Schulte Respond to California Surgeon’s Comments Regarding Doctor Training and Da Vinci Complications
(PRWEB) August 12, 2013 -- The Da Vinci Robot Surgery Complications lawyers at Wright & Schulte LLC, an experienced personal injury law firm, note that a prominent California surgeon recently discussed the role of doctor training in preventing serious robotic surgery complications. According to a report from Argonaut News, Dr. S. Adam Ramin, a urologic surgeon at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica who has testified as an expert witness in Da Vinci robot laws uits, maintains that many of the Da Vinci robot surgery complications seen in these procedures are due to a lack of surgical training with the robot. He added that in most cases, surgeons need 20 supervised surgeries with the Da Vinci robot in order to become proficient with the technology. Dr. Ramin’s comments came just days after Intuitive Surgical acknowledged that it had been named in at least 33 Da Vinci robot lawsuits, some of which allege serious personal injuries due to the company’s failure to properly train surgeons on the machine.

According to a recent Bloomberg report, the Da Vinci Surgical System was used in 367,000 minimally-invasive operations last year, and it is the only robotic surgery platform currently approved in the U.S. for soft-tissue procedures. While Dr. Ramin asserts that at least 20 proctored operations are needed to allow a surgeon to master the machine, some Da Vinci robot lawsuits allege that Intuitive recommends only two supervised robotic surgeries following a one-day session at company headquarters.

According to another Bloomberg report, the Da Vinci robot has been associated with a growing number of adverse event reports that detail possible Da Vinci surgery robot injuries, including some 70 deaths since 2009. Those reports have prompted the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to begin surveying doctors about the types of Da Vinci complications they may have observed in robotic surgery procedures. On July 16, the FDA also issued Intuitive Surgical a warning letter after an inspection of its headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, revealed several problems, including issues with Intuitive’s process for reporting device corrections and da Vinci complications to the agency.
