Dale E. Fox Travels to Turkey and Uncovers Its Complex Soul
Ridgway, Penn. (PRWEB) September 26, 2013 -- Have you ever wondered what it is like to live in a Muslim culture? Underneath cultural differences, are we all essentially alike, or are Muslims uniquely different? These are the questions that author Dale Fox set out to answer when she became a volunteer English teacher in the 99% Muslim country of Turkey. Her book “Turkey Uncovered” entertains while educating readers about the diversity she uncovered in this country rich in history spanning the earliest known civilizations to the modern Eurasian city of Istanbul. The reader will meet the two very different families she lived with as an English teacher, and many other unique characters she stumbled upon in her travels throughout the country. In the midst of her often humorous cultural clashes, Dale Fox sheds light on this strategic United States ally and the contradictory forces playing out today through the restless politics of what is often called “a moderate Islamic democracy.”
Turkey has been in the limelight recently, with many unanswered questions about its current orientation: East or West? Democratic or autocratic? Religious or secular? This book provides valuable insights on the riveting divisions present in their society through the author’s fascinating interactions as readers follow her on hilarious adventures through cities and countryside as she explores Turkish history and modern culture. From being caught in the middle of a major demonstration, basking in the beauty of the Aegean beaches, reveling in ruins thousands of years old, hitching a ride with Kurds in the southeast, and witnessing the Gezi Park demonstrations, readers will feel as though they are traveling right alongside the author.
“Turkey Uncovered” captures the diversity and complexity of modern Turkey through the voices of Turks of many persuasions–religious conservatives and secular liberals, ethnic Turks and Kurds, elite professionals and working class families, professionals and housewives, young and old. The book demolishes stereotypes and uncovers the true nature of a dynamic country that plays a vital role in geopolitics today. Dale Fox’s insightful political and social reportage in this travelogue guarantees that readers will be enriched by her accurate reflections of the various shades of truth portrayed by an entertaining cast of characters. So are the Muslims of Turkey uniquely different from citizens of the United States? Read “Turkey Uncovered” to discover the answer!
