Dallas Affiliate of International NGO Growing, Expanding
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- Population Media Center, an international non-governmental organization based in Shelburne VT, is pleased to announce a search for an executive director for the Texas State Chapter of PMC. The position will be based in Dallas, Texas.
“We are looking for an experience and dynamic individual, with a good grasp of reproductive health and rights issues and also someone who understands the connections between rapid global population growth and the stress civilization is putting on the environment,” said PMC founder and president William Ryerson.
PMC’s Texas Chapter was founded in early 2012 and has been active in the Dallas area through group meetings, special events and monthly state-wide conference calls. For the past two years, the group has tabled at various Earth Day celebrations in and around Dallas, including Earth Day Dallas at Fair Park. The mission of the chapter is to study, discuss, and help support ethical solutions to international human population issues as they relate to environmental conservation, the strengthening of human rights, and improving global health.
Paul Rodgers is the volunteer Chapter Moderator for the PMC Texas Chapter. Mr. Rodgers has long been active in Dallas politics and has always been concerned with population size and growth as an important sustainability issue.
“I first heard of PMC by reading a book by Mr. Lester Brown called ‘Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization’, which mentioned PMC’s work favorably,” said Rodgers. “From there I contacted PMC and we have been working to develop this state Chapter ever since.”
Population Media Center addresses various issues related to population and global sustainability, including reproductive health and women’s empowerment, through the use of entertainment-education strategies, like serialized dramas on radio and television, in which characters evolve into role models for the audience for positive behavior change.
PMC's programs educate people about the benefits of small families, encourage the use of effective family planning methods, elevate women’s status, prevent the exploitation of children, and promote avoidance of HIV infection. Long-running soap operas can also address harmful social practices, such as marriage by abduction, that demean women and lower their status.
In each country in which it works, PMC builds a collaborative process between radio and/or television broadcasters, appropriate government ministries, and nongovernmental organizations to design and implement a comprehensive media strategy for addressing family and reproductive health issues.
"Grassroots activism was the foundation on which the environmental movement of the late 1960's and early 1970's was built. However, since that time, mainstream environmental organizations have pulled up stakes and moved inside the Washington DC beltway," said Mr. Ryerson. "We are working to reverse that trend with our Dallas state chapter and the new executive director will play a crucial role in reinvigorating population activism at the local level."
