Dana Parker’s New Book “A Home for Dixie” is a Heart-warming Children’s Story of a Pony that gets Adopted and Finds a Forever Home

Dana Parker is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, living and working in Indiana. She has over 30 years of experience working with children, teens, and adults in multiple mental health settings.
Dana is married to Steve. They have one daughter, Apryl. Apryl sat upon a neighbor's horse for the first time when she was 8 months old. When Apryl cried after being taken off of the horse, the neighbor calmly said, "That's a sign. She will always love horses." Was that ever the truth!
Dana, Steve, and Apryl began volunteering at a horse rescue farm when Apryl was seven years old. They heard the stories of how every horse made it to the rescue farm. They heard the story of Dixie Doodle, a welsh pony, who had lived through years of neglect and abandonment. Dixie experienced multiple moves and multiple homes before coming to the horse rescue farm. Soon after hearing Dixie's story, Apryl and her family adopted this beautiful welsh pony.
Hearing about Dixie's story of years of neglect and abandonment, Dana saw many similarities in stories she had heard from some of her youngest clients that had been in abusive situations. Dixie had to learn how to trust others. So do children when they've lived through neglect, abandonment, and frequent moves.
This book is written for mental health therapists, case managers, and educators who work with children who have experienced different forms of trauma and displacement. This book is written for these special children to let them know that their feelings are OK. It is also written to bring awareness to the many neglected and abandoned animals, including horses, that are just wanting a forever-family to call their own.
