Dave Tomko Makes the Switch from Commercial Banker to Growth Coach Small Business Owner
Grand Rapids, MI (PRWEB) July 25, 2013 -- After a successful career in commercial banking Dave Tomko has decided to follow his passion and work directly with entrepreneurs to help them improve, strengthen and grow their businesses.
As a banking leader during the challenging times of the last few years, Tomko often found he had to be administratively focused on the operation of the entire bank rather than in the trenches with its clients.
So Tomko took another look at his professional direction and decided it was time to make a change – he wanted to dedicate his time to helping small businesses improve their stability and employment levels. That’s why he decided to become a business and sales coach and open the Growth Coach of West Michigan.
“From my banking experience, I already had a real appreciation and respect for business and for businesspeople – the men and women who jump in as entrepreneurs and build something new or better every day. The Growth Coach gives me a vehicle to help these owners think strategically and grow their companies so that they can employ more workers in ways that are profitable for all,” Tomko said. “It also gives me a method to help owners make succession plans so that as a business changes hands, they don’t leave the community – but rather, continue to build for everyone’s good.”
“I made the decision to leave banking in order to be able to spend 100 percent of my time working closely with business owners and non-profit leaders because I truly believe that strengthening those entities provides a lasting positive improvement for the whole community,” he said.
Tomko holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and an M.B.A. in Management from Western Michigan University. Before opening The Growth Coach of West Michigan, he worked as the Regional President of PNC Bank in Kalamazoo where he led the bank to the number one market share in Southwest Michigan. Tomko also has experience in loan underwriting, commercial lending and regional bank development. Most recently he spent 14 months building the foundation for a commercial lending business at Flagstar.
Those roles allowed him to get acquainted with the business community and to interface with non-profit and community groups dedicated to improving the business climate and providing support for area businesses.
“During this period I came to understand the great needs present in our community – really all communities – and became convinced that many of these programs do wonderful work, but they only treat rather than cure the problems of most of their clients,” Tomko said. “I would prefer to be involved in the cure of these ills instead of just their treatment. Further, I have come to believe that income security as derived via a good job is the best cure for many of these issues.”
