David Cuellar Calls for Environmental Care in Literary Debut
BELMONT, Calif. (PRWEB) December 03, 2015 -- David Cuellar has felt and seen the need for humans to rally and care for the environment. His debut book, “Plastic Island” (published by Trafford Publishing), follows a flute-playing Native American boy named Flute Boy and his new friend, Free Spirit, as they journey to an island filled with plastic debris and make a promise to protect the earth from further pollution.
According to UNESCO, more than 220 million tons of plastic are produced each year. As a result of oceanic plastic waste, large amounts of refuse create patches of trash known as gyres in large bodies of water. One such ocean gyre is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which occupies an area twice the size of Texas.
Within this educational children’s story, Flute Boy and Free Spirit travel to the United Nations to warn the organization of the dangers of plastic pollution. With the help of animals, Flute Boy and Free Spirit get the attention of the U.N. and convince them to clean up the ocean garbage once and for all.
Cuellar hopes his story inspires readers to have a greater appreciation for oceans and the environment as a whole.
An excerpt from “Plastic Island:”
“Deep in the ocean, they found Plastic Island—an island of all the world’s garbage, rubbish, and debris floating in the middle of the ocean as far as the eye could see. And because of the stillness in their minds and the love in their hearts, they knew they had to try and do something to make the earth a better place.”
