David Perecman, Lawyer for Family of Avonte Oquendo, Assists Grieving Relatives As The Missing Teen’s Remains Are Found
New York, New York (PRWEB) January 23, 2014 -- David Perecman, the attorney for the family of Avonte Oquendo, 14, helped the teen’s grieving relatives following the troubling discovery of his remains on the banks of the East River. DNA tests confirmed that the found body parts and scraps of clothing were those of the missing autistic boy. The teen was last seen on surveillance video leaving his Long Island City school and walking along the river on October 4, 2013, reported CNN News (1.21.14).
“After an exhaustive three-and-a-half month search by the family of Avonte, the people of the City of New York, and the NYPD, the news we all prayed would never come has indeed come to bear. The Medical Examiner has determined that Avonte is no longer with us and that the remains discovered in College Point are, indeed, him. May this family and all those who have been with them find solace and peace,” said Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm.
On October 4, surveillance video captured Avonte exiting his school for children with learning disabilities. On Thursday, officers found a torso, an arm, legs, dark jeans and size 5½ Air Jordan sneakers on the waterfront about 11 miles away from the Riverview School, where Avonte was a student, CNN News reported. A teenage girl who was shooting photos had come across his remains.
A reward for information leading to the missing teen’s safe return was last up to $95,000. Police received hundreds of tips, and hundreds of people joined the search for him, but Avonte was never found.
The medical examiner is investigating the cause of death, CNN News reported.
