DC Habitat’s 25th Anniversary Celebration to Honor Extraordinary Area Leaders on November 20
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) November 12, 2014 -- Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. (DC Habitat) will celebrate 25 years of building hope and changing lives in the nation’s capital on the evening of Thursday, November 20 with “Raising the Roof,” a celebration fundraiser to be held at Union Station.
The event, chaired by the Honorable Henry Cisneros and emceed by WJLA/ABC-7News Anchor Scott Thuman, will honor three extraordinary leaders for their commitment to affordable and energy-efficient housing in the District.
The honorees are:
Sheila Johnson - CEO of Salamander Hospitality and president, managing partner and governor of the Washington Mystics, and a co-founder of Black Entertainment Television;
Joel Towers – Executive dean of Parsons The New School for Design, well known for initiatives in environmental and sustainable design, urban design and transdisciplinary design;
Dee MacDonald Miller – A senior vice president in the Tenant Representation Division of Jones Lang-Lasalle, she and her colleagues contributed hundreds of hours on DC Habitat’s Empowerhouse site.
The event is largely underwritten by two title sponsors, Pentagon Federal Credit Union (PenFed) and Valspar. Both companies have supported DC Habitat in previous years – PenFed through the local “Homes for Vets” initiative, and Valspar through its contribution of paint to Habitat homes in DC as well as around the country.

Both PenFed and Valspar are partnering with DC Habitat as Legacy Sponsors in 2014, meaning they are each helping to underwrite 25th anniversary event costs while also sponsoring construction of affordable homes in the Ivy City community of Northeast DC.
For 25 years, DC Habitat has been working to reduce poverty housing and homelessness in the nation’s capital by building affordable, energy- efficient homes for low-income working families. With “Raising the Roof,” DC Habitat is seeking to raise $1 million to fund construction of its next 25 homes in the District.
The anniversary comes at a time when affordable housing in the District is increasingly scarce and even dilapidated properties command higher rents out of reach for many low-mid income working families.
