December Employment Increases by 15.8 Percent Over November
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) January 31, 2016 -- The Economic Situation report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, January 8, 2016, revealed a growth of 292,000 jobs for the month of December, an increase of 15.8 percent over November’s gain of 252,000 jobs.
Unemployment for the month of December remained unchanged at 5 percent, or 7.9 million, for the third month in a row. Over the last 12 months, the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons decreased by 0.6 percentage point and 800,000, respectively. Last month, employment increased within several industries, including professional and business services, construction, health care, and food services and drinking places.
Employment within the professional and business services sector increased by 73,000 in December with temporary help services accounting for more than half of the job gains at 34,000 jobs. Across 2015, professional and business services added 605,000 jobs, a decrease of 14 percent over the previous year.
The construction sector continued to grow for the third consecutive month, with 45,000 jobs added in December. Over the year, the sector has added 263,000 jobs, a decrease of 22.1 percent over the previous year.
Health care employment increased by 39,000 jobs last month, with increases in ambulatory health care services (23,000) and hospitals (12,000). Over the year, the sector has increased by 3.2 percent or 474,700 jobs.
Food services and drinking places added 37,000 jobs last month, and 357,000 jobs over the year.
Total nonfarm payroll employment for October and November was revised from 298,000 to 307,000 jobs and 211,000 to 252,000 jobs, respectively. With these revisions, employment gains in October and November combined were 50,000 more than previously reported.
