December Is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month
Miami, FL (PRWEB) December 10, 2015 -- 'Tis the season of joy, giving and indulging. The down side is that statistics show Americans have taken the “eat, drink and be merry” mantra quite too literally — ending in binge drinking and reckless driving. Drunk driving accidents skyrocket year after year during the holiday season.
According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, forty percent of accidents during the month of December result from impaired driving. There was a total of 3,394 people killed in car crashes from 2008-2012 with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 grams per deciliter or higher (above the legal limit). Throughout the month of December in 2014, a whopping 840 fatalities were reported from accidents involving a drunk driver.
“The rate of drunk driving accidents triples around the holiday season. People that don’t drink often will have a few, and then choose to drive. Aside from putting lives at risk, a criminal record is another consequence of driving under the influence. DUI arrests are at its highest between Thanksgiving and New Year. According to Statisticbrain.com, Florida has been leading the nation in DUI arrests, with 61,852 cases in 2015.
“There needs to be a heightened level of alertness throughout the season for anyone on the road. Put down the phone, don’t speed, and be aware of the drivers around you. And if you choose to drink, don’t pick up the keys.”
December has been proclaimed “National Impaired Driving Prevention Month” by the President of the United States. The “Drive Sober or get Pulled Over” campaign for the National Highway Traffic Administration announced that there will be a crackdown on drunk driving from December 16 through January 1, with frequent patrolling and DUI checkpoints.
“In the case an accident should occur, any victim of the negligence of the other party may be eligible for compensation through Florida’s Crimes Compensation Act. One should contact law enforcement within 72 hours, contact an attorney, and file suit,” says Graham.
As much as the holiday season is about rejoicing and enjoying the many traditions and festivities, it is imperative to remember to act responsibly and make the safety of others a number one priority. Before attending a holiday party, make provisions for getting home safely if you choose to drink. Assign a designated driver, take a taxi or a popular alternative, Uber.
