Deliveroo Riders to Access First-of-its-kind Insurance for Food Delivery Riders
LONDON (PRWEB UK) 6 December 2017 -- The first ever insurance offer for food delivery riders in the UK on-demand economy is made available to Deliveroo riders through Perkbox and specialist insurer, Bikmo. All Deliveroo riders will be able to purchase sickness and accident cover, from their first delivery, at a cost of £1.85 per week. This is cheaper than comparable products for people working in the on-demand economy. Deliveroo riders can claim 75% of their average weekly income for up to 6 months if they are unable to work due to illness or injury caused at or away from work. Cyclists will also have access to first-of-its-kind public liability insurance - up to £2m.
Deliveroo has been working with Perkbox, the online perk platform, since 2016 to provide riders with access to a range of offers including bike repair tools, cycling equipment, high street and entertainment discounts, regular treats such as free coffee and cake, and perks sourced specifically for Deliveroo riders.
Deliveroo riders can now access the first sickness and accident insurance available to on-demand food delivery riders in the UK. The new industry-leading cover, from Bikmo accessible exclusively through Perkbox, means Deliveroo riders can claim 75% of their average weekly income for up to 26 weeks if they are unable to work due to illness or as a result of an injury while working.
Cyclists will also have access to public liability insurance, a first-of-its-kind policy for food delivery cyclists. The new scheme will give Deliveroo riders up to £2 million in public liability insurance, a product previously unavailable to those working on a bicycle.
The illness and accident cover is the first such product available to on demand food delivery platform riders in the UK. The policy is wide ranging, with other measures including:
- Up to £2,500 in annual medical expenses cover
- £1,500 annual cover for an overnight hospital stays, and up to £750 for family members to accompany them during their stay
- Up to £2,000 for dental repair
- 20 days of jury service cover up to a total of £700
- Up to £200 phone cover if damaged during an injury causing accident
The availability of the new Bikmo product through Perkbox comes following Deliveroo’s recent submission to the Government’s Taylor Review, in which the company outlined its commitment to end the trade off between flexible working and security.

How it works
Deliveroo riders can access these insurance products through Perkbox, the online perks platform. The products are provided by Bikmo and underwritten by UK General Insurance Ltd and Canopius. Riders that avail of the product can claim on the policy when they suffer an injury when logged into the Deliveroo app or illness which leaves them unable to work.
The product is available to Deliveroo riders at £1.85 per week.
If a rider is unable to work due to accident or illness, the rider will be paid 75% of their gross (before tax and national insurance) income earned from their work with Deliveroo based on their average gross earnings from Deliveroo in the 12 month period before their injury or illness.
Responding to what riders want.
In a recent survey of UK riders, 75% agreed that they would like greater security when working with Deliveroo, but not at the expense of flexibility.
First ever insurance policy for working cyclists
Bikmo will offer working cyclists the first-of-its-kind third party liability insurance policy for working cyclists. This product is available to Deliveroo cyclists at a cost of 65p per week.
