Denver, CO (PRWEB) March 26, 2014 -- Commenting on a report about an increase in hit-and-run accidents in Colorado, car accident attorney A. Gary Bell Jr. of Bell & Pollock, PC, said more work must be done to reverse this alarming trend.
Attorney Bell expressed his comments in response to an article published by the Windsor Beacon about fatal hit-and-run accidents. The number of fatal hit-and-run accidents in Colorado increased by 88 percent in 2012 compared to the previous year, according to the report.
“Our law firm knows all too well how common hit-and-run accidents are in Colorado,” Bell said. “We have handled many cases and have seen first-hand the devastating impact of a hit-and-run accident. Despite tough laws in Colorado to punish drivers who flee the scene of an accident, hit-and-runs continue to be a growing problem. We’d like to see new public awareness campaigns designed to change attitudes some drivers have about hit-and-run accidents.”
In 2012, there were 34 fatal hit-and-run accidents in Colorado, according to the Windsor Beacon, which cited data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That figure represents an 88 percent increase compared to 2011, when there were 18 fatal hit-and-run accidents in Colorado, the Windsor Beacon reported. There were 12 hit-and-run fatalities in Colorado in 2010.
Between 2008 and 2012, a total of 104 people died in hit-and-run accidents in Colorado, the Windsor Beacon reported. Of those 104 fatalities, 35 people died in hit-and-run accidents in Denver during that same time period.
More than half of the victims of fatal hit-and-run accidents between 2008 and 2012 in Colorado were pedestrians, the Windsor Beacon reported. Specifically, 55 pedestrians died in hit-and-run accidents in Colorado between 2008 and 2012.
Another grim statistic relates to the number of people killed or injured in hit-and-run accidents in Denver’s three largest metro areas: Denver, Aurora and Lakewood. Between 2011 and 2013, more than 1,300 people were killed or injured in hit-and-run accidents in these three areas, according to the Windsor Beacon article.
