Design Approved for New Restaurant Development in Downtown Downey, Designed by Long Beach Architecture Firm M. Grisafe Architects
Long Beach, Ca (PRWEB) February 05, 2018 -- Long Beach architecture firm M. Grisafe Architects announced recently that the City of Downey’s Planning Commission has approved their building design for a new restaurant space, which will be located on the corner of Downey Avenue and 2nd Street in Downtown Downey. The plans for the restaurant include a second-story addition to the existing building that will feature a covered rooftop deck for dining. On the street level, patio seating will be added on the north side of the building for additional eating space.
The building that will house the new restaurant has been vacant since 2013, except for brief use in 2016 as the campaign headquarters for a local politician.
Originally built in 1967, the remodeled space will help support the objectives of the Downtown Downey Specific Plan, which seek to establish Downtown Downey as an area that supports and entertains people of all ages, provides additional employment opportunities within the city, preserves and enhances the character of the existing buildings, and serves as a cultural center for the City of Downey. According to the City of Downey’s Planning Division Staff Report, “The proposed project will promote these objectives and draw attention to an under-utilized corner of Downtown Downey.”
The redesigned building will be modern in its architecture, with rustic elements such as used brick, panels with a weathered wood appearance, and metal canopies above the building’s windows and doors.
Mark Grisafe, owner and architect at M. Grisafe Architects, had this to say about the project, “We were very pleased to receive unanimous approval from the City of Downey’s Planning Commission for this project. We think this renovated space will be a great addition to city’s downtown area, which has seen some exciting new growth in recent years.”
Grisafe continued, “Given the high-profile nature of this particular corner in Downtown Downey, both our client and the City of Downey were very invested in the design of this building setting the tone for future development in the area. They wanted it to compliment the pedestrian scale of downtown, and provide a modern building, while enhancing the outdoor dining experience. The client was also very interested in referencing the richness of the traditional downtown facades. We think we were able to accomplish all of this in the design of this building, and we are happy to have the approval of City.”
Once completed, the building will have a total of 1,962 square feet, with an additional 203 square feet of outdoor dining space on the ground level and 776 square feet of dining area on the covered rooftop deck.
