Destination Hope Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center Sees Admissions Increase in January
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (PRWEB) January 27, 2015 -- January is traditionally a time for new year’s resolutions – many people resolve to get healthy, get fit or take better care of themselves. People suffering from drug or alcohol addiction are no different.
“The first month of the year is always one of our busiest,” said Ben Brafman, CEO of Destination Hope, a nationally recognized substance abuse and dual diagnosis treatment facility located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “Many people have difficulty with friends and family during the holidays and realize that it is time to make a change.”
Inquiries and calls to Destination Hope’s drug and alcohol rehab program increased in November and December, but have reached unprecedented levels this January.
“As the sober January movement has grown across the United States, more people are recognizing that they aren’t as casual of a user as they once thought,” said Brafman. “Many people, when confronted with the reality of what they are doing, want to make a change and January is the perfect time to start anew.”
While Brafman’s drug and alcohol rehab treats all forms of substance abuse and addiction, heroin continues to be one of the primary drugs of choice for incoming clients. Florida’s very public crack down on pill mills and prescription drug abuse over the last few years have left addicts without access to prescription pain killers while still suffering from addiction. Many have turned to heroin, an inexpensive and more and more easily available drug in South Florida.
“The heroin available on the streets today is more potent and more easily accessible than ever before,” said Brafman. “The unintended consequence of the crack down on prescription drugs is that people are turning to heroin.”
A report released last year by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) indicated that deaths from heroin rose 89% in the State of Florida from 2011 to 2012. Drug and alcohol rehab centers like Destination Hope understand these statistics all too well.
Like many states, Florida’s law enforcement program focused on removing the access to prescription drugs, but did not adequately address reducing demand. That leaves addicts without access to prescription drugs and without the help to overcome their addiction. With primary admissions for heroin on the rise and more calls about treatment, the drug and alcohol rehab center at Destination Hope is becoming one of the key forces in the fight against substance abuse.
