Details Announced for Annual Mandi Schwartz Tournament
WILCOX, SASKATCHEWAN (PRWEB) December 08, 2015 -- (December 7, 2015) – Athol Murray College of Notre Dame is pleased to announce details pertaining to their annual Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament.
The tournament, scheduled for December 10-13, 2015, is well known as the largest female Midget AAA tournament in western Canada.
Competition kicks off in preset matches and advances into rounds based on the outcome of these matches. The tournament is sanctioned by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association, but it is not affiliated with any league.
Participation in the event is by invitation only with just 20 of the most elite teams from various parts of North America invited to compete. This represents less than a 50% invitation rate for the teams that apply for consideration, making participation highly coveted. Information on the teams chosen to participate in this year’s event can be found on the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame website.
The tournament pays tribute to Athol Murray College of Notre Dame graduate and former Yale Bulldogs player Mandi Schwartz by raising money for the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Bursary at Notre Dame. Schwartz suffered from acute myeloid leukemia and was diagnosed in 2008 during her junior year at Yale University where she served as a member of the women’s hockey team. This form of cancer is now recognized as the most common form of leukemia in adults according to the National Cancer Institute. Schwartz died from her disease at the age of 23.
In addition to serving as a tribute to Schwartz, her namesake tournament also raises funds for the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Bursary, which awards funds to one student from Athol Murray College of Notre Dame each year.
