Detecting Cataracts Early May Lead to a Longer Life
Dunwoody, GA (PRWEB) September 19, 2013 -- A recent study done by Australian researchers and published in the American Academy of Ophthalmology showed those undergoing cataract surgery have a 40% lower mortality risk. Over half of Americans suffer from cataracts by the time they turn 80. However, many of the elderly don’t undergo any type of treatment for cataracts.
The elderly are most at risk of developing cataracts, along with smokers, those with diabetes and anybody suffering an eye injury. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the United States and the visually impaired have a higher mortality risk compared to those with normal vision according to the American News Report (9-9-13).
Symptoms and signs of cataracts include:
• Cloudy or Foggy Vision
• Blurry Vision
• Changes in the way you see colors
• Problems driving at night
• Sudden changes to your glasses prescription
• Double vision
• Issues dealing with glare during the day
• Progressive nearsightedness or "second sight"
Regular cataract screenings can help prevent the build-up of protein, which causes cloudiness in your eyes. Those over the age of 60 should schedule comprehensive eye exams often. Other preventative measures should be taken, including:
• Eating leafy greens
• Eating fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants
• Wearing sunglasses
• Adding Omega 3 Fatty Acids to your diet
• Monitoring blood sugar
• Maintaining a healthy weight
According to Tina Boatman the Corporate Director of Wellness and Resident Care at Dogwood Forest of Dunwoody, monthly eye exams can help spot signs of cataracts. "When residents shy away from activities they used to enjoy or begin bumping into items, it can be a sign of cataracts," stated Boatman.
When left untreated, cataracts develop slowly and can lead to complete blindness. "Monthly eye exams and other preventative measures are the best way to ensure blindness doesn't become a result of untreated cataracts," says Boatman.
