The annual statewide crackdown on Labor Day drunk driving kicked off in mid-August, according to the news report, with the unveiling of a billboard designed to remind drivers of the costs associated with a drunk driving arrest and conviction.
The Oakland Press reports that the billboard depicts a specially painted car that’s one half taxi cab, one half police car. Using the slogan “Been drinking? Choose your ride,” the billboard cites the cost difference - $20 for an average taxi ride home versus $10,150 for an average DUI arrest and conviction in Michigan – as a means to dissuade drivers from getting behind the wheel after they’ve had too much to drink.
“With Michigan sending a clear message to would-be offenders that drinking and driving can be a costly offense, the hope is to discourage drivers from engaging in this dangerous practice,” said Acker, an auto accident attorney in Detroit. “The consequences of drunk driving, though, can oftentimes extend far beyond money.
