Detroit, MI (PRWEB) November 14, 2014 -- Detroit personal injury lawyer Gary Bloom today said recent research finds that insomnia significantly contributes to fatal car accidents as well as other unintentional fatal injuries.
Bloom comments came in response to a report in the University Herald (“Insomnia is a Major Contributor to Motor Vehicle Deaths,” Nov. 3, 2014).
“As a personal injury lawyer, I’ve handled a variety of motor vehicle accident cases and know that fatigued driving is a major factor in many of these crashes,” Bloom said. “I hope the findings of this study bring more attention to the problem of fatigued driving.”
Bloom added that he hopes the study boosts awareness about the importance of getting enough sleep. “The findings of this study clearly show that if you have sleeping problems and you drive, you are at a higher risk of causing a serious accident,” said Bloom, Detroit attorney with over 30 years’ experience. “It’s essential that drivers who suffer from insomnia understand these risks so they can take appropriate action to keep themselves and others safe.”
According to the University Herald, national spokesman for the Healthy Sleep Project Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler said: “Sleep is a necessity, not a luxury, and the promotion of healthy sleep should be a fundamental public health priority.”
In a study published in the November edition of the journal Sleep and described in a report by the University Herald, researchers found that people who have difficulty falling asleep – one of the main symptoms of insomnia – are 2.8 times more likely to die in a car crash than drivers who are well-rested.
Researchers studied died of more than 54,000 men and women between 20 and 89 years old, according to the University Herald. The report states that during a 13-year follow-up period there were 2787 unintentional fatal injuries, including 169 deaths from falls and 57 deaths from car crashes.
Attorney Bloom said other scientific studies have found that driving while fatigued is almost as dangerous as drinking and driving. Bloom cited a report in Reuters (“Sleepy, drunken drivers equally dangerous: study,” May 30, 2012).
“We know that responsible drivers would never drive drunk. But many people don’t think twice about getting behind the wheel after having little sleep,” Bloom said. “This mindset needs to change, because too many tragedies have happened as a result of drowsy driving.”
Bloom said anyone who is injured or loses a loved one in an accident with a fatigued driver should seek the advice of legal counsel.
“These can be complicated cases,” Bloom said. “It’s difficult to prove that a driver caused an accident because he or she was suffering from insomnia or simply too tired to drive. There are no tests for alertness like there is for intoxication. But experienced attorneys know how to investigate these cases. At the Law Offices of Gary Bloom, we typically work with experts such as accident reconstructionists who can examine the scene. They can look for signs such as a lack of skid marks that reveal a driver fell asleep before the crash.”
