In a study published in the November edition of the journal Sleep and described in a report by the University Herald, researchers found that people who have difficulty falling asleep – one of the main symptoms of insomnia – are 2.8 times more likely to die in a car crash than drivers who are well-rested.
Researchers studied died of more than 54,000 men and women between 20 and 89 years old, according to the University Herald. The report states that during a 13-year follow-up period there were 2787 unintentional fatal injuries, including 169 deaths from falls and 57 deaths from car crashes.
Attorney Bloom said other scientific studies have found that driving while fatigued is almost as dangerous as drinking and driving. Bloom cited a report in Reuters (“Sleepy, drunken drivers equally dangerous: study,” May 30, 2012).
“We know that responsible drivers would never drive drunk. But many people don’t think twice about getting behind the wheel after having little sleep,” Bloom said. “This mindset needs to change, because too many tragedies have happened as a result of drowsy driving.”
