digedu Report Reveals Benefits and Barriers of Technology Use in the Classroom
Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) April 21, 2014 -- The report of a recent nationwide survey of more than 600 K-12 teachers revealed that though technology use is ubiquitous in the classroom, creating meaningful digital learning experiences for students remains challenging for many educators. Specifically, 88% of educators reported that both they and their students use technology in class; however, just 24% reported that technology has a strong positive effect on student achievement.
The study highlights the barriers that teachers face when implementing classroom technology, with almost two-thirds of educators reporting a lack of hardware in school and two in five reporting a bandwidth deficit. In addition to fundamental infrastructure issues, a lack of adequate support (51%), training (46%), and visibility into student progress (33%) were cited among the teachers surveyed in reference to technology use in the classroom.
The survey, whose respondents closely mirrored the demographics of the K-12 teacher population in the United States, was conducted to assess various aspects of teachers’ use of technology in the classroom. The questions focused on three areas:
1. How teachers use technology and if they feel the current usage is effective and meaningful for students
2. Barriers that exist to making classroom technology effective
3. How much time they spend using technology in the classroom, and if they desire to use it more often
