When Google released its Panda and Penguin updates over the last two years, it penalized people for 'black hat' linking practices, a lot of brands lost their ranking position. Ranking Criteria

More consumers today are using search to find products and services than ever before. Forty-five percent of all search is coming from cell phones, which people have within an arm's length, 24/7. Google's search algorithm is primarily comprised of two things: relevancy and popularity.

Now a page must have proper site taxonomy that includes pages of content optimized with desired search terms for a brand, proper titles on the pages, keywords in the URLs and copy, and crawl path instructional files—signals that tell the search engines what the page and website is all about.

Page links must be authentic and from reliable and relevant sources that have high page rank—Alexa Rank and MozRank, which are industry watchdogs that measure and track the popularity of websites by how many visitors, searches, and natural links determined through a range of third-party search and social influence tracking tools.
