It was announced this week that posting "revenge porn" images and videos on the internet will become a criminal offence in England and Wales. The Criminal Justice and Courts Bill, which has a specific amendment dealing with such actions, will receive Royal Assent and become law later. The amendment covers images that are circulated on social networks, including Facebook and Twitter, and those sent by text, with offenders facing up to two years in jail.
Dr. Toogood has experience of dealing with victims of revenge porn and providing suitable technical assistance using Digitalis’ technology. She has also conducted interviews with teenagers and young women about the pressures of sending explicit images and videos to your partner in the digital age. Today’s radio piece included an anonymous case study, which highlighted the high level of stress that victims incur and also the feeling of humiliation.
