Dignity Health Bakersfield, the Centre for Neuro Skills and KCCC Partner with Kern High School District to Prevent Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries in Student Athletes
Bakersfield, CA (PRWEB) July 25, 2016 -- To address this issue, a training session for school coaches, which is also open to the public, is set for Aug. 4 in Bakersfield. The event will offer information about the inherent dangers of concussions, the return-to-play process, and acute and persistent symptoms that may require treatment.
The Kern County Concussion Consortium (KCCC), in partnership with the Kern High School District, the Centre for Neuro Skills, and Dignity Health Mercy & Memorial Hospitals are collaborating on the event. Other community collaborators include: Kern Medical, San Joaquin Community Hospital, California Neurosurgical Institute, Central Valley Physical Therapy, Brain Injury Association of California, Bakersfield City School District, and Terrio Physical Therapy & Fitness.
The consortium’s mission is to advance the health and safety of Kern County athletes by improving the prevention, evaluation, and management of sports-related concussion through collaboration, education, and clinical practice. The KCCC offers symposiums and events for athletes, coaches, trainers, educators, and healthcare providers.

The Centers for Disease Control reports show that the amount of reported concussions has doubled in the last 10 years. The American Academy of Pediatrics has reported that concussions have risen 200 percent among teens ages 14 to 19 in the last decade. In Kern County, 155 cases of concussion among high school athletes were reported during 2015-2016.
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. This fast movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging the brain cells.
Concussions can cause serious and sometimes permanent damage. In some cases, dangerous and sometimes fatal swelling and bleeding can occur inside the brain. Repeated concussions and head trauma without proper time healing between each head injury has been shown to cause long-term harm.
