Discovery USA Celebrates Rare Disease Day
Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) February 26, 2015 -- When we think about healthcare and healthcare companies, lots of people think about the “big issues”—cancer, diabetes, heart disease. At Discovery USA, we recognize that people around the world are affected by so much more. A “rare disease” is defined as one that affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States, or less than 1 in 2,000 in Europe. But there are more than 6,000 different rare diseases, and together they affect tens of millions of people globally, and 1 in 10 in the United States—that’s 1 person on every elevator and 4 on every bus—and two-thirds of these patients are children.
With rich experience and many partners in the rare disease space, Discovery USA recognizes the impact and importance of the “rare,” and proudly joins rare disease patients, families, caregivers, and other healthcare advocates to observe Rare Disease Day® on February 27, 2015, in their Chicago and Philadelphia offices. Rare Disease Day is dedicated to elevating global public understanding of rare diseases and calling attention to the special challenges faced by patients and the community.
“Rare disease is close to our hearts, as many Discovery USA employees have been affected by rare disease in some way,” says Executive Vice President Kristin Keller. “Our motto is ‘better the world,’ and that is what we hope to do this year on Rare Disease Day in a way that is meaningful to us and to the rare disease community.”
To honor this national event, Discovery USA employees will be raising donations for Global Genes (http://www.globalgenes.org) to help eliminate the challenges of rare disease. Additionally, employees will be taking to social media to show their commitment to rare disease, both professionally and personally.
