Dogwood Forest Rocks the Walk to End Alzheimer's
(PRWEB) October 24, 2013 -- Seniors at all eight Dogwood Forest communities participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer's in September and October, helping raise money to fight the disease.
The Walk is the United States' largest event to raise funds and awareness about Alzheimer's, according to the Alzheimer's Association. It's also an intensely personal issue to many residents of Dogwood Forest communities, according to spokesperson Kia Crawford.
“It's near and dear to our hearts at Dogwood Forest because every day we see the impact that Alzheimer's has on our residents and families,” Crawford said. “We believe this condition can be cured and everyone here is proud to be part of that.”
Dogwood Forest communities are built to provide seniors with the assisted care they need as well as a dignified, holistic and well-balanced lifestyle. The communities have special memory care neighborhoods where residents coping with Alzheimer's and dementia receive in-depth memory therapy.
Crawford says that residents help support the Walk even when they can't personally take part in it.
“We hold fundraisers and donation drives throughout the year for the Walk to End Alzheimer's,” she said. “Residents help guide and lead these events. We all do our part to help the Alzheimer's Association.”
This year, that part was substantial: the communities raised a total of $13,283.
“This is money that goes directly to research and will help improve lives for generations,” Crawford said.
The largest share of the funds this year was raised by Dogwood Forest of Fayetteville, spurring a friendly sense of competition for next year, Crawford said.
“Our community members are already planning ahead and wondering how they're going to top their record next time around.”
