Doosan Fuel Cell Wins 13-Unit Contract with South Korean Utility Company
South Windsor, Conn. (PRWEB) June 11, 2015 -- Doosan Fuel Cell has been selected by Korea South East Power Co. Ltd. (KOSEP) to provide 13 Doosan PureCell Model 400 units to the utility’s plant in Bundang, a Seoul suburb. The new project comes only one month after six Doosan fuel cells went live at the KOSEP facility in Ansan, also near Seoul, South Korea’s capital.
The new installation will incorporate a state-of-the-art construction design – the first of its kind in South Korea – with multiple 400 kW fuel cells installed on each floor of a two-story structure. The installation will conserve valuable urban land resources, taking up half the space of previous configurations, while maximizing power density. The 13-unit installation will produce 5.6 megawatts (MW) of clean energy and heat for the local electric grid and KOSEP customers and is fully scalable to support the addition of power plants to meet future needs.
“Doosan Fuel Cell was selected based on our recent successes with KOSEP, specifically the high ratings we received in operations and reliability of output,” says Eric Strayer, vice president of sales and business development for Doosan. “Additionally, the industry’s first two-story design will establish a new standard for big-city space savings while still reducing pollutants, costs and serving as the clean energy alternative to traditional grid power.”
When the PureCell Model 400 power plants go live at the end of 2015, Doosan will have 48 active fuel cells in South Korea generating nearly 21 MW of electricity. The process of producing renewable energy via hydrogen-based fuel cells, which has been around for over 50 years, is rapidly gaining global acceptance. The fuel cell industry has been on a strong growth trajectory during the last five years and is projected to double in size by 2019 to $5.2 billion.*
“More and more companies are beginning to understand the benefits of fuel cells as a green energy source to achieve their sustainability goals and decrease their ecological footprint,” says Strayer. “We are pleased to be able to provide KOSEP with a way to stabilize their energy costs and operate their facility with a reliable on-site source that generates continuous clean power.”
