DOROT Benefit Celebrates 38 Years of Service to Community
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 22, 2014 -- DOROT will commemorate 38 years of service to older adults at its Annual Spring Benefit on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at The Museum of the City of New York. This fundraising event supports DOROT’s intergenerational mission of keeping socially isolated seniors connected to the community through meaningful relationships with volunteers of all ages.
This year DOROT honors New York businessman Alan Laytner, a lifelong Upper West Side resident, who first learned of DOROT through his children’s volunteer efforts. Since then, he has served on DOROT’s Board of Directors, was the Chair of the Program Committee, and volunteered at many DOROT events including the Thanksgiving Banquet and Holiday Package Deliveries. He also contributes donated goods from his family business, Laytner’s Linen & Home, to the Homelessness Prevention Program, DOROT’s transitional housing program for homeless older adults.
“DOROT appealed to me because it strives to give people dignity,” Alan said. “When people grow older they often feel irrelevant and less needed. DOROT makes sure they feel valued and lets them share their life experiences and memories with others."
DOROT will also recognize the graduating high school seniors of Next Generation, DOROT’s teen leadership board: Molly Kaiser, Elena Krasnoff, Jamie Lichtenstein, Jared Mandelbaum, Morgan Shear, Max Slepian, and Carly Steckel.
DOROT’s 38th Annual Spring Benefit will be about old world New York, including a klezmer band, classic New York cuisine, and a rare behind-the-scenes look at some of the Museum’s archived treasures. Joel Kazis is chairing the event, and Claire Ellis, Lisa Heffner, Rachelle Gribetz Laytner, Ann Wimpfheimer and Denise Wyse serve on the Benefit Committee.
The event will also feature private, after-hours tours of the Museum, including its popular exhibitions: City as Canvas: Graffiti Art from the Martin Wong Collection; Activist New York; Gilded New York; and Palaces for the People: Guastavino and the Art of Structural Tile.
The DOROT Benefit will begin at 6:30 PM at The Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue in New York City.
