DownAlert PSD™ Launches to Increase Visibility & Safety for Watersports Participants
Lake Saint Louis, MO (PRWEB) May 23, 2017 -- Recreational boaters have a new way to stay safe this summer when participating in towable watersports thanks to a Missouri entrepreneur’s new invention. Launching today in recognition of National Safe Boating Week, the device, called DownAlert PSD, aims to solve the problem of leaving tubers, skiers, and wake boarders at risk while unattended in the water by arming them with a highly visible personal signaling device.
DownAlert PSD is the creation of Lake Saint Louis, Missouri resident Denise Pitlyk, a lifelong boater and watersport participant. The device comes in the form of a nylon and elastic cuff that is worn on the arm of a watersports participant. An attached signaling flag is deployed from the device and manually waved by the participant when in the water. The idea came to Pitlyk when she sought a better way to feel more at ease when her daughters were skiing and tubing on the busy waters of Lake Ozark and Lake Saint Louis.
“I always felt that my children – and now my grandchildren – needed to have an extra layer of safety and visibility when they fell in the water while tubing or skiing. We used life jackets and skier-down flags, but there was nothing actively alerting other boaters to exactly where my daughters were in the water. As a mother, that was too risky for me. That’s when I came up with the idea for DownAlert PSD,” said Pitlyk. “Researching the boating safety industry, I learned that the majority of recreational boating accidents are caused by issues like operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, and ski/tow/tube mishaps. This validated my belief that someone in the water with no visible signal is really at risk of an accident. The device I created provides a visible signal for these participants, as well as peace-of-mind for parents like me.“
Officially launching today to celebrate National Safe Boating Week, the device has already generated interest among leaders in the boating safety industry who are actively seeking methods to increase water safety and reduce the risk of towable watersports activities. The National Association of State Boating Law Administrator (NASBLA) recently named advocating for the safety of towed watersports as part of its “Top 10 Most Wanted List of Recreational Boating Safety Improvements.”
