Dr. David Rankin, Leading Authority on Breast Explant Surgery, Discusses Illness Associated with Breast Implants
JUPITER, Fla. (PRWEB) November 22, 2017 -- Dr. David Rankin, a leading South Florida plastic surgeon, has been called on to perform breast explant (removal) surgery on a number of women who have reported experiencing symptoms of breast implant illness (BII). Two of these women are Playboy playmates Karen McDougal and Kimberly Holland, both of whom reported experiencing symptoms including fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, allergies, muscle pain and weakness they believed were caused by their breast implants.
“I would get sick every couple of months and be sick for six to eight weeks at a time,” McDougal tells People. “It just never went away.”
Dr. Rankin is a leading authority on breast explant surgery and has been featured in the media, including on The Doctors and Inside Edition, where he spoke about BII and breast explant surgery.
“Some studies have shown that there is some seepage of the silicone shell into the outer area and this may potentially cause an immunological reaction where the body is causing these symptoms,” says Dr. Rankin.
Although breast augmentation has a high safety record, women who believe they are experiencing symptoms of breast implant illness due to their saline or silicone gel implants are encouraged to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon for removal. Dr. Rankin has performed hundreds of breast explant procedures at Aqua Plastic Surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Rankin creates small, strategically placed incisions to achieve as little postoperative scarring as possible. Through these incisions, the breast implant and capsule are removed carefully to preserve the natural shape of the breast. When possible, Dr. Rankin performs an Enbloc (total capsulectomy) and muscle repair to remove the implant and capsule together. He cleans out the chest cavity to ensure that the capsule has been removed in its entirety. If necessary, Dr. Rankin will perform breast lift to reposition the breast and remove loose skin that has become stretched out due to the implant.
Recovery from breast explant is similar to breast augmentation recovery. Patients typically need to take one to two weeks off from work and other normal activities. Dr. Rankin works closely with Explant Concierge, Jeff Rose to monitor each patients’ successful recovery and healing.
